Men, are you tired of the way you look in a T-Shirt? Are you catching flack at the gym? Is your wife giving you a hard time about borrowing her bra?
Now you can improve your looks and confidence with Male Breast Reduction surgery. Do not be embarrassed about your condition. It is estimated that 40-60% of the male population suffer from enlarged breasts and a Gynecomastia procedure is the answer to your condition.
Male Breast Enlargement (Man Boobs) can be caused by many things. Liver problems, hormonal imbalances, steroids, alcoholism or heavy marijuana use.
Male breast reduction surgery (gynecomastia ) is to remove the enlarged male breasts.
It may be unilateral or bilateral. It is usually benign and may spontaneously resolve itself. However, those that persist into adulthood may need further workup to rule out malignancy or other treatable cause. Thus, a consultation with endocrinologist may be necessary before pursuing surgery.
Depending on the degree of enlarged breast tissues, surgery for removal of breast tissues may either be liposuction alone, or liposuction combination with direct excision of breast tissues.
The recovery and outcome is highly satisfactory, giving back the male chest appearance, which may improve one’s confidence.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery Potential Risks
No surgeries are performed without risks. Dr. Vu’s goal is to perform the planned procedure, take extra precaution during surgery, and most important of all is to be safe and yet achieve utmost optimal outcomes. Following are some of the potential risks that are commonly discussed about regarding reduction of gynecomastia for male patients.
A. Contour Abnormalities
Although Dr. Vu will make every effort to give you a “perfect” result, the area of excess tissue removal may end up with a contour that is slightly too high or too low.
You may feel the “edge” around the areolar dissection. Massage and time (4-6 months) usually eliminate or reduce this problem, if it occurs.
B. Reduced sensation of nipple
Any surgery of the breast can lead to reduced nipple sensation. Reduced sensation is usually temporary, but may take months to resolve. In unusual cases, some permanent loss of sensation may occur.
C. Recurrence of breast enlargement
This is uncommon, but can occur. If this happens, you may require further surgery later.
A collection of fluid under the skin occurs occasionally during the postoperative period. Aspiration of the fluid with a needle is frequently helpful. Secondary surgery is rarely necessary.
E. Hardness within breasts
Postoperative scarring within the breast tissue may cause areas of hardness. Occasionally, areas of hardness, when discovered later may cause worries about cancer. Mammography or even biopsy are occasionally indicated.
Male Breast Reduction Postoperative Care
Special attentions are placed during your postoperative period. Dr. Vu’s goal is to make sure that you are comfortable after you leave the surgery center, and have proper instructions how to take care of yourself in order for you to have a pleasant surgical experience
If the breast tissue has been excised, Dr. Vu will usually leave a drain in place for 3-6 days. The drain evacuates the fluid that accumulates after surgery and enables you to heal faster. When the drain is first put in place, the bulb at the end of the tube will be compressed to create gentle suction. As the fluid collects
in the bulb, the bulb will expand.
Empty the suction bulb whenever it fills halfway, by opening the plug at the top and pouring out the contents.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE BULB FROM THE TUBING.
Squeeze the bulb to recompress it, and put the plug back into the hole at the top in order to maintain the vacuum. If the bulb fills rapidly after emptying it, or you need to empty it more than three times a day, please call us at 503-601-2910.
If an Ace wrap or bandage has been wrapped around your chest, it will usually be removed during your first postoperative visit.
C. Showering and bathing
You may shower or bathe (even with the drain in place) 24 hours after surgery. If you have a bandage, call 503-601-2910 and ask the nursing staff or Dr.Vu for directions.
Gentle activities of daily living for the first 10 days. No aerobic exercise for at least 3 weeks. You may take gentle walks after 10 days.
E. Sun exposure
Your scars will be sensitive to the sun for the first year or more. Avoid sun exposure or use sun screen with an SPF of at least 15.
F. Swelling and bruising
The operative area will be swollen and will usually have an area of black and blue. All swelling may not disappear for about 6 months.
